SECOND SUSPECT ARRESTED IN IDA BARBOUR SLAYING

Police on Monday arrested the second man in their investigation into the March 15 murder of a man shot to death in the Ida Barbour housing project.

Sylvester F. Pleasant, Jr., 18, also known as ``Lil' Butch,'' of the 2500 block of Graham St. in Portsmouth was arrested about 12:15 p.m. after police chased him, first by car and then on foot. He was arrested near Sprately Street, said G.A. Brown of the Police Department.

Brown said police also confiscated narcotics and a semiautomatic handgun when Pleasant was arrested.

On Friday, Melvin D. Granger, 21, also known as ``June Bug,'' of 503 Gygax Ave. was taken into custody.

Both Pleasant and Granger were charged with murder in the slaying of Stephen Parker, 39, of the 1100 block of South St. Parker was shot to death in the 1100 block of Barbour Drive on March 15. Deangelo Reed, 17, of the first block of Suburban Court in Portsmouth, also was wounded at the same location and was in stable condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

In addition to murder, Pleasant is charged with two counts of malicious wounding, two counts of attempting to kill and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Granger also is charged with one count of malicious wounding, two counts of attempting to kill and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
