A proposal by Dare County Commissioner Shirley Hassell that would have implemented changes in the county's travel policy was defeated by a 6-1 vote Monday in a light workday for the Dare County Board of Commissioners.
Commission Vice Chairman Clarence Skinner said the current rules governing travel were adequate.
``Our present travel policy provides for accountability and is clearly stated,'' Skinner said. ``The department heads we have are experienced people. There are also very thorough provisions to review questionable charges.''
Skinner said the current policy reduces paperwork and saves the county time. He also pointed out that it complies with North Carolina and Internal Revenue Service guidelines. He said changing the policy would ``add complications'' to government.
Hassell said she was not surprised by Skinner's response to her proposal.
``I don't see what this has got to do with adding complications to government,'' she said. ``This is keeping the people advised about what's going on. There are a lot of people out there who are concerned about the amount of money being spent for travel.''
Hassell and Commissioner Sammy Smith had asked to table discussion on the issue, because Hassell said she had not read the current policy.
In other business Monday, the commission approved a resolution for financing for the Fessenden Center on Hatteras Island. Approval of the resolution became necessary after costs for the project increased by $320,000. by CNB
