SARAH R. SINGER: FORMER CHILD-CARE DIRECTOR FOR THE NORFOLK YMCA

Many parents from around Hampton Roads have relied on Sarah R. Singer to help care for their children.

For seven years, Singer served as the child-care director for the Norfolk YMCA. As such, she oversaw the after-school programs in several Norfolk elementary schools, the summer camp program and the Y's in-house pre-school program.

Singer, who lives in Colonial Place, recently resigned from the position, however, to get back to another of her loves - teaching. She is now teaching at the preschool level at Eastern Shore Chapel in Virginia Beach.

``I always liked working with kids, and I always wanted to be a teacher,'' she said.

A native of Alexandria, Sarah took a job with a D.C.-area Y soon after graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in art education. The combination of a job opening and her attraction to the Hampton Roads area brought her to Norfolk.

``I visited friends here before, and I really liked being near the beach,'' she said.

Name: Sarah R. Singer.

Nickname: None.

What brought you to Norfolk: Job and geography.

Birthplace: Alexandria, Va.

Birthdate: March 10, 1960.

Occupation: In transition from school-age child-care director with the Norfolk YMCA for seven years to new position as a teacher with Eastern Shore Chapel.

Marital status: Married to Eric Singer.

Children: 250-plus (at work).

Last book read: ``The Way to Cook'' by Julia Child.

Favorite movie: ``Being There.''

Favorite magazine: Vanity Fair.

If you could trade places for just one day with anyone in the world, who would it be and why? Maya Angelou. It would be wonderful to sound that good and be so eloquent.

Biggest accomplishment: Renovating our old house.

Most embarrassing moment: Meeting Mr. Rogers (who was wearing a very small bathing suit) and discussing child care in a Washington, D.C., YMCA swimming pool.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wish I could carry a tune.

Perfect way to spend the day: A good book and a big hat at the beach.

Favorite vacation spot: Rehobeth Beach, Del. (great boardwalk).

Pet peeve: ``Hands off'' parenting, bad spellers, NRA, parking at the beach, people who don't follow the Golden Rule.

First job: Gopher at a nursing home.

Worst job: Dressing windows for a department store (it is hot and not glamorous).

Hobbies: Reading, cooking, old movies, biking, travel.

Favorite restaurant: Fellini's, Green Trees.

What do you like most about Norfolk? The children, the arts, the seasons.

What do you like least about Norfolk? The heat.
