About 120 people involved in skeet shooting, an increasingly popular substitute for hunting, are ready to aim and fire in behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern Virginia.
They will spend Sunday shooting at clay disks to raise about $9,000. The wish-granting organization serves children with a terminal illness or a life-threatening condition.
This first Make-A-Wish Corporate Cup Challenge is sponsored by Skeet-Toons of Suffolk, and Sussex Shooting Sports. It will take place in Sussex, on U.S. 460.
The shoot begins at 9 a.m. The ``high over'' winner gets $150, a $250 certificate for air fare to Orlando, and a two-night stay at The Stauffer Inn there.
Four first-place shooters will receive shotguns, four second-place shooters get gun carts, four third-place shooters will be given hunting and shooting packages, and four fourth-place shooters receive 100 rounds of sporting clays and a half-case of shells.
There are four prizes in each category because each participant is in a class to match his talents. Class A features the sharpest shooters. The other classes are B, C and D.
The winning corporate challengers will receive a silver cup engraved with their company name, which will have to be defended at a similar gathering in 1996.
The participating individuals and teams, who will bring their own guns, have been pre-registered at an entry fee of $125 per individual, $500 for a four-man team. Registrations are still being accepted.
``This is a fun sport,'' said Bill Beigle, chairman and owner of Skeet-Toons. ``And, it's a fast-growing sport. I've been doing it four years. You walk through the woods, talk, shoot at targets.
``You can do something with a gun and have a good time without killing. It's an alternative to hunting,'' he said. ``You shoot clay targets in the woods in hunting conditions.''
Breakfast and lunch will be provided for the 120 shooters and 30 volunteers. A cocktail party and food will follow the awards ceremony, and there will be several drawings.
Individuals or groups wishing to participate may call 934-0136. Visitors are welcome to watch the event. They may buy lunch for $8. by CNB
