Dr. James S. Landis, 85, of the 1100 block of Llewellyn Ave., died March 21, 1995, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Dr. Landis graduated from the veterinary school of Ohio State University. He came to Norfolk 60 years ago and founded the Landis Dog and Cat Hospital on 21st Street in Norfolk. After his retirement from veterinary medicine, he operated the Tidewater Boarding Kennels on Glenrock Road in Norfolk.
Dr. Landis was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Norfolk. He was a life member and past lieutenant of the Kiwanis Club, a Legion of Honor recipient, and was most recently active with the Elks Lodge.
Dr. Landis was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Edythe Melchor Landis, and his stepson, L.W. Mitchell.
Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Emily M. Mitchell of Williamsburg; two granddaughters, Kim M. Bethea of Madison, Wis. and Gaye M. Deal of Norfolk; and four great-grandchildren, Emily Bethea and Thomas, Kim and Jamie Deal; and three nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Pastor James G. Cobb and Pastor Marshall F. Mauney. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Lutheran Church of Norfolk or to Norfolk Academy.
