Guest cantors from Philadelphia and Baltimore will join with Rabbi Philip S. Krohn for the 10th annual Cantorial Concert at Gomley Chesed Synagogue at 7:30 p.m. April 9.
Debra Cook Marlowe, cantor at Congregation Beth Israel in Lebanon, Pa.; Farid Dardashti, cantor at Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Baltimore; and Rabbi Krohn will be accompanied on the piano by former Virginia Symphony Conductor Winston Dan Vogel, who returns each year for the concert.
Marlowe, a coloratura soprano, studied with the late Irene Williams and made her operatic debut in 1971 with the Glyndebourne Opera. While working as principal coloratura at Bremen Opera House in Germany and Bavarian Opera House in Munich, she sang at other major opera houses including Covent Garden, Berlin State Opera, Hamburg State Opera and many others. She has sung with the Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, London Sinfonetta, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the London Philharmonic. Last year, she edited a book of songs for Hildegard Publishing Co.
Dardashti is the first Iranian-born concert artist and hazzan (cantor/singer) in the Western world. A tenor, he sings in a dozen languages including English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, French, Latino, Russian, Greek and Persian. Dardashti sings operatic, folk, Broadway and popular songs. As a teenager, he starred in his own weekly television program in Iran and then came to the United States to study music. He was graduated as ``hazzan'' from the Seminary College of Jewish Music in New York.
Rabbi Krohn sang in major cities across the country as a child cantor and later studied with well-known cantors such as Maurice Gantchoff, Joshua Weisser and Abraham Shapiro. He is a graduate of the Cantors Conservatory of America, received bachelor's and master's degrees from the School of Sacred Music in New York and is a member of the Cantors' Assembly of America. He has composed a liturgical service for cantor and youth choirs that has been performed throughout the United States.
Vogel will return to Hampton Roads from a conducting engagement in Europe to accompany the singers. He received a B.A. in music from the Juilliard School of Music and a master's from Ball State. An Israeli, he has served as music director of the Israel National Opera, Haifa Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Opera and the Israel Philharmonic Choir. MEMO: Tickets are $10.
