For the third consecutive year, the U.S. Senate recognized the school district for its efforts to become more efficient and more responsive to citizens.
The district is again a finalist for a U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award for Virginia. The awards encourage statewide, and thus national, improvement in public and private arenas.
Portsmouth's strategy is based on work by the late management guru W. Edwards Deming. It emphasizes quality control heavily focused on worker involvement, goal-setting and communication within the corporate structure - as opposed to competition among workers and management control.
Winners in four categories will be announced at an April 20 banquet in Alexandria.
