The new Whalebone Junction Information Center is ready for spring and summer visitors, officials said Thursday.
Built through a partnership between the National Park Service and the Dare County Tourism Board, the new facility is located on N.C. Route 12 at the northern entrance to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. National Park Service employees constructed the new facility, and Tourism Board revenue financed the building material.
The new Whalebone Junction center contains more than 400 square feet of heated area, 1,344 square feet of decking under roof and is handicapped accessible.
The information center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays from March 30 through Memorial Day. During the summer, it will be open seven days a week.
Free brochures and information about Hatteras Island will be available at the Whalebone Junction center. During seven months in 1994, more than 50,000 visitors sought information at the Whalebone Junction center. For more information, call the Tourist Bureau at (919) 473-2138. by CNB
