Former San Diego Chargers wide receiver Johnnie Barnes signed a one-year free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday night, according to his agent, Ron Del Duca. Terms were not disclosed.
Barnes, a Suffolk native who played for John F. Kennedy High and Hampton University, was a ninth-round draft pick by the Chargers in 1992 but played sparingly in three seasons. He caught just one pass last season and wasn't activated for the playoffs.
Del Duca said Barnes visited Green Bay and San Francisco in addition to Pittsburgh. The agent said Barnes chose the Steelers because of their lack of a dominant receiver and the prospect of Pittsburgh using more four-receiver sets to compensate for the loss of tight end Eric Green to Miami via free agency. by CNB
