A $200,000 grant from the state will assist Help and Emergency Response (HER) complete its new shelter for battered women and children.
The current shelter, open since October 1985, helps about 400 women and children annually in Portsmouth and Chesapeake.
The new shelter, to be constructed this year in Portsmouth through HER's ``Raise the Roof'' capital campaign, will allow 40 percent more women and children to be helped. Groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for April, with the shelter opening in December.
The shelter provides a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, a support group, legal advocacy, counseling and support, information and referral, an after-care program, community education and a program for children in residence. by CNB
