City and school officials took time out Wednesday night to celebrate the school system's central mission: teaching children.
The 25th annual Teacher of the Year Banquet at Great Bridge High honored the 1995 award-winning teachers from all the city's schools.
``We live in an era when it is important to recognize the people who dedicate themselves to education,'' said Mayor William E. Ward.
Ward warned teachers that with tightening federal, state and local budgets, new money for education will be hard to come by. Teachers will be challenged to do more with less.
But he pledged the City Council's support.
``We are committed to education,'' he said. He also commended Superintendent C. Fred Bateman, who will retire this summer after 15 years at the helm, for his leadership.
``You have brought to Chesapeake the very best,'' he said.
School Board Chairman Maury B. Brickhouse called teaching the ``noblest profession.''
``These ceremonies are intended to recognize all teachers in Chesapeake,'' he said.
Bateman said that teaching is a profession ``where extraordinary human beings come into contact with children and raise them up.''
``Hopefully, every teacher has the resources and the materials and the support and the encouragement to do their very best,'' he said.
The speakers' comments came after a dinner in the school's cafeteria, accompanied by music and singing from students.
``It's our time to say thanks to those who do the job that not everyone can do, and who do it well,'' Bateman said. ILLUSTRATION: TEACHERS OF THE YEAR
