Consumers who have been asked to donate used clothing and household items to benefit Multiple Sclerosis have complained to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services that solicitations were misleading. Donations were actually sought for a group called United Support Against Multiple Sclerosis rather than the well-known National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which does not solicit donated goods. Because callers did not give the full name of the organization, donors report that they thought they were giving to the national organization.
Central Telemarketing Inc. is soliciting donated goods in Northern Virginia on behalf of United Support Against Multiple Sclerosis, also known as US Against MS or USAMS. Neither United Support Against Multiple Sclerosis nor Central Telemarketing, both of Timonium, Md., has registered to conduct charitable solicitations in Virginia as required by the Virginia Solicitation of Contributions Law.
Any solicitations by or on behalf of these organizations are in violation of the law, and the public is warned that contributions may be used for non-charitable purposes. Call 786-1343.
