BUDGET APPROVED
The School Board Tuesday night unanimously approved a $362.2 million budget for next year, including $149.6 million in city money.
The budget now goes to the City Council for negotiation and approval.
The local share is about $15 million more than what the city had expected to spend.
City officials are due to release their proposed budget, including money for schools, on Tuesday.
TUITION TO BE CHARGED
Many students attending summer school this year will have to pay for their classes.
School Board members voted unanimously Tuesday night to begin charging tuition for all summer school programs except mandatory elementary classes, Literacy Passport workshops and English courses for foreign students. In the past, many classes were free.
The charges were proposed by Superintendent Sidney L. Faucette, who said he wanted to try to make summer school pay for itself.
Students who qualify for free and reduced-price lunch or for Aid to Families with Dependent Children will be granted scholarships.
Transportation is included in the cost and will be provided to all summer school classes except driver's education, programs for gifted students and elementary school foreign language.
Tuition charges include:
$70 for fourth- and fifth-grade summer school.
$70 per course for middle school classes.
$95 and $145 for high school courses, depending on whether it is normally a semester or yearlong course, respectively.
$70 for special education fourth- and fifth-graders and $70 per course for middle school special education.
$75 for band and orchestra.
$50 for classroom driver's education and $75 for behind-the-wheel instruction.
$35 for elementary school foreign language.
$115 for elementary summer camp for gifted second- through sixth-graders.
$125 for summer academy and arts courses for gifted sixth- through 12th-graders.
$125 for science and mathematics magnet school for fourth- through 11th-graders.
