Built in 1917, the former Nansemond Ordnance Depot is now the
subject of a federal environmental probe for possible chemical and
weapons contamination. Currently owned by the state of Virginia and
various government agencies, General Electric Co., and Dominion
Resources Inc., the old depot is eroding at its shoreline where
suspected waste sites once were operated. Munitions already have
been found on the beaches and throughout the property.
