Stu Jackson, general manager and vice president of basketball operations for the Vancouver Grizzlies, will be the headliner at the annual Celebrity Luncheon of the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.
The four-night PIT commences in the Churchland High School gym on April 5. The luncheon will be on Friday, April 7 at noon at the Holiday Inn-Portside.
Jackson was head coach at the University of Wisconsin the past two years. He was the NBA's Director of Basketball Operations in 1991 and served as the league's liaison for the 1992 Olympic basketball team.
Jackson was head coach of the New York Knicks for just over one season, becoming the second youngest head coach in NBA history at the age of 33 in 1989. The Grizzlies will join the NBA next season.
The 64-player PIT field will be completed this week. Commitments have been received from 40 players, including eight who were Players of the Year in their conferences.
``Thirty-six of these players were named to their all-conference teams,'' said Yale Dolsey, co-chairman of the selection committee. ``We have five of the top 10 scorers in Division 1.''
Those agreeing to play this weekend were Grambling's Kenny Sykes, the nation's No. 2 scorer and Player of the Year in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and No. 3 pointmaker Frankie King of Western Carolina, the Southern Conference Player of the Year.
Also committing was Shane Kline-Ruminski of Bowling Green, who is the nation's leader in field goal accuracy with a 69 per cent shooting average.
Players previously committed include Norfolk State's Corey Williams, Virginia's Junior Burrough and Jason Williford, Old Dominion's Petey Sessoms, James Madison's Louis Rowe and Kent Culuko, Jermaine Parker of UNC-Charlotte, Purdue's Cuonzo Martin and Michigan's Jimmy King and Ray Jackson.
