Jesse Clifford Sykes, 87, died March 25 at Lakewood Manor, a Baptist retirement home.
Mr. Sykes was born in Buffalo, Texas, and was retired from the U.S. Civil Service. In 1940, he traveled from New Mexico with his family to Alexandria, Virginia, to work as a machinist at the Torpedo Factory. After World War II, he worked as a supervisor, model maker and apprentice instructor at the David Taylor Model Basin in Carderock, Maryland, until his retirement in 1969.
For many years, he was a deacon at Del Ray Baptist Church in Alexandria. In 1976, he moved to Virginia Beach, where he was a member of Kings Grant Baptist Church. He was a Mason at the Henry Knox Field Lodge in Alexandria, and he was a Gideon.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa Sykes; a son, Jesse William Sykes of Vienna, Virginia; a daughter, l`Leta Hankley of Chesapeake; a brother and sister, Travis Sykes and Ruth Pace of El Paso, Texas; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 p.m. at Bennett's Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street in Richmond, on Sunday, March 26. The funeral will be conducted Monday, March 27, at 2:00 p.m. at Cambridge Baptist Church, 12025 Gayton Road in Richmond. Burial will be on Tuesday, March 28, at 11:30 a.m. at National Memorial Gardens in Falls Church, Virginia.
