TRY THE `PLEASE BE SEATED' PROGRAM

Mrs. D. J. Ozley expressed concern about seeing children riding in automobiles not wearing seat belts or not sitting in safety seats (letter, March 15).

I am also very concerned and upset. It is every parent's responsibility to make sure his children are being protected and safe when riding in a vehicle, especially small children who cannot speak for themselves.

I have found a way to try to help these children by educating their parents, or at least reminding them of the importance of safety belts.

I found a program called ``Please Be Seated.'' The program's postcards were at my child's school, but I am sure these cards are available elsewhere also.

I keep the cards in my car. Whenever I see a child not in a car seat or secured by a seat belt, I fill out a card and send it to the commonwealth of Virginia, which sponsors the program. The state in turn sends a friendly reminder to the vehicle owners asking them to obey the law. They will receive information on how to obtain a free safety seat if they cannot afford one.
