PASSER-BY DISCOVERS GRENADE, WITH PIN INTACT

A hand grenade - pin safely in place - was found near some railroad tracks by a passer-by just before noon Sunday.

The device was eventually turned over to explosives experts from the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station.

The grenade was found about 11:15 a.m. along the tracks that parallel 39th Street. Police took it to a field near Booker T. Washington Middle School and cordoned off the area until explosives experts arrived.

``It was a real hand grenade, but it had its pin in place,'' said Capt. Rick Blaylock of the Fire Department.

``There are many guesses as to how it just cropped up. But we have no information other than it was just there.'' by CNB
