E. SPENCER WISE

Edward Spencer Wise of Virginia Beach passed away Sunday, March 26, 1995, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.

He was born in Cashville, Va., on the Eastern Shore in 1914, and was graduated from Virginia Tech in 1936.

He was an officer of the U.S. Navy and was a combat veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict.

In 1965 he received a doctoral degree from the University of Illinois and taught Environmental Science and Biology at Christopher Newport University. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1979, after 20 years.

He was active in The Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, and many other environmental and civic groups. He was a member of the Jamestown Society, Sons of the American Revolution and First Families of Virginia, and was contributing writer for Chesapeake Bay Magazine.

He was a member of Galilee Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Smith Wise; two daughters, Mary W. Powell of Virginia Beach and Lucy W. Thrasher of Washington, D.C.; a son, Edwin S. Wise of Napa, Calif.; three grandsons; and a sister, Dorothy W. Gibb of Machipongo, Va.

A graveside service will be held in Onancock Cemetery (on the Eastern Shore) Wednesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Harry W. Crandall, and a memorial service will be held in Galilee Episcopal Church, 40th and Pacific Ave., Friday, March 31, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Russell Burchard. Maestas Funeral Home, Baltic Avenue Chapel, is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad Building Fund, P.O. Box 945, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451.
