Herbert Franklin Rountree, 92, of Route 1, died Sunday, March 26, 1995, in Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.
Mr. Rountree was born in Gates County. The son of the late Alfred Patrick and Mrs. Annie Margaret Eure Rountree, he was a retired self-employed farmer and seller at the Portsmouth Farmer's Market. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Gatesville Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Bessie Piland Howell Rountree; one daughter, Carolyn R. Eaton and her husband, W. Cary Eaton of Raleigh; one stepdaughter, Opal H. Askew of Eure; one stepson, Gene Howell of Virginia Beach; one sister, Annie Elizabeth Rountree of Gates; three grandchildren, Charles R. Eaton, Elizabeth C. Eaton and Mary C. Eaton, all of Raleigh; six stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and a niece, A. Margaret Rountree of Gates. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eunice R. Rountree and a son, Herbert F. Rountree Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in Gatesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ric Durham. Burial will follow in Gatesville Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home handling arrangements. Friends may join the family following the service in the church social hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund of Gatesville Baptist Church.
