STUDENTS TREATED AFTER SCHOOL BUS, CAR COLLIDE

About a dozen students from Hunt-Mapp Middle School were taken to local hospitals Monday after they complained of back and neck pain following a school bus accident.

The accident occurred about 2:25 p.m. at the intersection of Hatton and Ann streets in Park View.

The bus collided with a 1982 Chevrolet. The driver apparently failed to yield the right of way, police spokesman G.A. Brown said.

The car's driver, Antonio Moore, 30, of the 1600 block of Spectator St., was charged with reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.

He was arrested for failing to appear on an unrelated charge of driving with a suspended license, Brown said.

The bus had just dropped off some students, and was not moving fast, Brown said. He estimated that Moore probably was driving at 10 to 15 mph.

Brown said neither vehicle was seriously damaged.

Students suffered no visible injuries, but several complained of back and neck pain. As a precaution, they were taken to the hospitals on rigid stretchers with braces on their necks.

Ten students were taken to Portsmouth General Hospital, located a few blocks away, and the others were taken to Maryview Medical Center.

Spokeswomen for the two hospitals said emergency room staff members had told them there did not appear to be any serious injuries. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
