A jury has recommended a sentence of life plus 118 years in prison for a man convicted in the August 1993 slaying of a man in an Ocean View motel.
Shawn Johnson, 22, was found guilty Thursday of murder, robbery and use of a firearm.
It was his second trial on the charges. The first resulted in a hung jury on Dec. 13.
Johnson was one of several men charged with the slaying of 20-year-old Elijah Thornton III. Police said a group of men broke into an apartment in the 7900 block of Ransom Road and shot Thornton about 6 a.m. on Aug. 21, 1993.
Thornton, of Portsmouth, was employed by the Navy Exchange System.
