I sat on the forum for the articles ``Sex in the '90s,'' and since that time have been following the local response and the national news. Some very disturbing events have transpired since the series ran.
1. Governor Allen proposed that ``Sex Education/Family Living Education'' be made optional.
2. HIV/AIDS has become the No. 1 cause of death for people 25-44 years of age.
3. The trial of O.J. Simpson began.
I find it disheartening that our governor wants to make a very necessary educational component optional, while here in Hampton Roads we have the highest rate of teenagers with HIV/AIDS in Virginia.
Think of how much education could be spread if our local and national news devoted as much coverage to HIV/AIDS education as to the Simpson trial.
We must continue to educate the public about the truths of HIV/AIDS. We must make every attempt to reach our families, friends and neighbors about the consequences of unprotected sexual activity, about the responsibilities we have to our fellow man and woman and the children of tomorrow.
