Carrie Virginia Lilly ``Joann'' Smith, 74, died Wednesday, March 29, 1995.
Mrs. Smith was born July 25, 1920, in Mercer County, W.Va., to the late Shelby Gould and Effie Grimm Lilly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Luther Smith Sr. She was a teacher in the Chesapeake School System for 33 years and taught for 1 1/2 years in Mercer County, W.Va., before coming to Chesapeake. She attended Concord College for two years, received her bachelor of science in education from ODU as well as her master's degree in 1975.
She was a member of the Lamplighters Class at Good Hope United Methodist Church and a substitute teacher for that class, the Nettie Hufton Circle, the Church Women United, Eastern Star in Athens, W.Va., Delta Kappa Gamma Upsilon Society International, Mercer County Historical Society and was a lifelong member of the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers.
Survivors include four sons, Dr. Charles Luther Smith Jr. and William Lee Smith, both of Virginia Beach, Jimmy Ray Smith and Robert Swanson Smith, both of Chesapeake; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Good Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Copeland officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in Twiford Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake. Memorial donations may be made to the church or to the American Cancer Society.
