SOUTHERN COMMAND OF MILITARY FORCES TO CENTER IN MIAMI

Under the decision, the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command would move from Panama to the Miami area, said the officials, who spoke on condition they would not be further identified.

Possible sites in Miami were a Coast Guard facility in southern Dade County and the Miami International Airport.

The Southern Command, one of five regional military commands, is responsible for coordinating military operations in Central and South America. It is part of the Pentagon's ``joint'' approach to warfighting in which a single commander can direct forces from each of the military services. by CNB
