A fire sparked by an electrical malfunction in the attic of an apartment building left eight families temporarily homeless Wednesday.
The fire at the Sussex Apartments on Birmingham Avenue was reported at 12:53 p.m. and was brought under control in just under an hour.
Few of the two-story building's residents were home at the time, and no one was reported injured.
The fire broke through the roof, and all the apartments sustained extensive smoke and water damage. One apartment was gutted.
With the help of the Red Cross, the managers of the complex arranged for all the families to be put up in a local hotel until vacant apartments are ready for them. All the families are expected to be back in apartments by the middle of next week, a spokesman said.
