On Saturday, a ``wall'' between Hatteras Island and the rest of Dare County will come tumbling down.
At 7:30 a.m., phone service between Hatteras and other county communities will no longer include a toll, as Extended Area Service takes effect.
Carolina Telephone customers overwhelmingly approved EAS service in September.
Dare County Commissioner Doug Langford said the new service will help unify the county. Langford led the push for EAS.
``We have finally eliminated the artificial barrier which has divided the county for too long,'' Langford said. ``This is now one county.''
Langford also said the establishment of EAS will mean significant savings for local businesses, and will enhance economic opportunities.
County spokesman Charles Hartig said Hatteras Island residents who wish to call the administrative offices in Manteo can still dial 995-4461.
``That number will remain operational for at least six months,'' Hartig said. ``The 995-4401 number to the satellite office in Buxton, and the 995-4404 number for the health department have not changed.'' by CNB
