How do they do it?
Granby High students Julie Jones, Gladys Mangaliag and Rebecca Shank are able to remain at the top of their class and lead a well-rounded life. They are masters of the art of time management.
Julie, 17, a senior, maintains an A average while taking two advanced placement courses and physics. As if this were not enough, she devotes about 16 hours a week to the Granby swim team and six hours to the Granby Strollers, Granby's performing orchestra. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and spends about three hours a week doing volunteer work.
Managing her time is obviously a necessity.
``I have a Pocket Pal calendar where I write down everything I have to do and when things are due,'' Julie said. ``I also make to-do lists, and my mom reminds me.''
Sixteen-year-old Gladys, a junior, makes straight A's and is a member of an after-school science program called Norstar. She gets home from school at about 4 p.m. daily. Being a member of this program, she must attend weekend and summer sessions. She is also a member of Future Problem Solvers, attending that group's meetings once a week until 5 p.m.
To keep up with everything and ``maintain her sanity,'' Gladys also keeps a planner.
``I have to be very organized, keeping my notebooks neat, a clean and tidy room, and a locker that doesn't fall on me when I open it,'' she explained.
Rebecca, a 15-year-old sophomore, also manages to make excellent grades and be involved in extracurricular activities. She is a member of the debate club, the softball team and is the sophomore class treasurer.
``I try to get things done one at a time, concentrate on what I'm doing and finish it,'' she emphasizes.
Although all three girls seem to be incredibly busy with school work and functions, they also have a social life. However, all seem to agree that the school week is too hectic to do much socializing.
``My social life is limited to Fridays and weekends - after swimming I'm usually too dead to do anything,'' Julie said.
Some even have a boyfriend along with everything else.
All three say that in order to have a balanced life, just remember to keep on track and not lose sight of what is important. ILLUSTRATION: Photo by GARY C. KNAPP
