Great Neck Baptist Church will break ground Sunday on a $850,000 sanctuary, which will be attached to the front of the current building on General Jackson Drive off Inlynnview Road.
The Southern Baptist congregation of about 350 members hopes to complete construction of the new church by the end of this year.
The church is celebrating its 30th anniversary. It began as a mission church of Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church in Norfolk. The first service was conducted May 5, 1965, in Trantwood Elementary School. The church, known then as Great Neck Chapel, continued to meet at the school until November 1968, when its present facility was opened.
It officially adopted the name Great Neck Baptist in October 1972.
A half dozen pastors have served the church since then. The church's current pastor, the Rev. B.L. Kincaid, has overseen the congregation since December 1992.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, following the worship service. The public is invited. ILLUSTRATION: An artist's rendering shows the new sancutary being attached to
