Bulldozers have pushed up great, dark piles of brush and stumps in the Interstate 64 median at the eastern entrance to Chesapeake.
That thin patch of woods in that narrow space was not much to look at. It was mostly scrubby pines, briars and vines.
Even so, it's hard to drive by now without feeling a pang of loss.
Sure, the sacrifice was justifiable. It will result in a safer, more efficient transportation system and maybe even save saves.
