LAST YEAR'S sudden rise in the popularity and number of teen dance halls seems to be declining. Because of dwindling crowds, some of these clubs have shut their doors and have called it quits. The most recent closing is that of the Hornets' Nest.
The Hornets' Nest was the only teen club in the Chesapeake area. Built with the help of Deep Creek High choral students, it appealed to many locals. Unfortunately for Chesapeake's clubbers, it closed unexpectedly earlier this month.
``We really didn't want to,'' said Steve Verde, son of the owner and the club's disc jockey. ``At first, kids supported it, then slowly the numbers (began to) decrease. But we did try to give teens a place to go.''
Nicholas Shockley, a junior at Deep Creek High School, was a regular at the Hornets' Nest. When he found his favorite hangout closed, he was really disappointed.
``It was a great place to hang out, relax and be with your friends away from school,'' he said.
Weekends will be a lot different now. ``We really haven't found another dance club to go to, so it's getting kind of boring (around here),'' Nicholas said.
Another regular at the Hornets' Nest, Deep Creek junior Kevin Klewer, said: ``I wish it wasn't closed. I went about every other weekend and I had a lot of fun up there.''
The owner said he had considered closing the club for six months. MEMO: Stephanie Stevenson is a junior at Deep Creek High School.
