Judge Bernard Gibbs Barrow, Court of Appeals of Virginia, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 1995, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
Barrow, 57, served on the Second Judicial Circuit Court in Virginia Beach from 1980 to 1985. He was appointed to the appellate court as one of 10 original judges when it was formed in 1985. In January, he announced his retirement from the bench effective June 1, 1995. Barrow also served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1976 to 1980. After a long residency in the Tidewater area, he moved to Charlottesville in 1990.
Barrow received his BA from the University of Virginia in 1958, his law degree in 1965 and his Master of Laws in the Judicial Process in 1988. He was presently enrolled in the Doctoral Program at the Law School and was an adjunct faculty member teaching classes in appellate procedures.
Barrow was a member of the Virginia State, Charlottesville-Albemarle, Norfolk-Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach bar associations, and the Maritime Law Association.
From 1965 to 1970, he was a partner of the law firm of Vandeventer, Black, Meredith and Martin in Norfolk. He was in private practice before becoming a member of the firm of Barrow and Lowe in Virginia Beach. In 1967, Barrow was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
Barrow traveled frequently in Italy and spoke Italian fluently. In 1990, he spoke to the Associazione Internazionale Guiristi in Florence, Italy, comparing American and Italian criminal procedures.
Barrow is survived by his wife, Sherri Eliades Barrow of Charlottesville; his son, Bernard Gibbs Barrow Jr., of Atlanta, Ga.; his daughter, Isabel Barrow and grandson, John L. Spilman Jr., both of Charlottesville. He is also survived by his brothers, William A. Barrow of Richmond and James A. Barrow of Hampton; and his aunt, Sarah B. Davey of Virginia Beach.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 31, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Charlottesville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Judge Bernard G. Barrow Scholarship, in care of the University of Virginia Fund, P.O. Box 3446, Charlottesville, Va. 22903.
Interment will be private. Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
