James Oscoe ``Mose'' Basnight, a longtime mail carrier and the uncle of state Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight, was killed Thursday when his car went out of control on U.S. Route 264.
Basnight, 85, who lived in Manteo, was driving near the Dare County Landfill on a stretch of road known as Dewey's Curve when the accident occurred about 2:20 p.m.
``Apparently he ran off the road on the left side, and then pulled back onto the right shoulder,'' Trooper Jeff Rose said. ``The vehicle turned over, and he was thrown from the car.''
The car then plunged into a canal. Rose said Basnight was not wearing a seat belt.
Basnight was well-known throughout Dare County as a retired rural mail carrier delivering mail from the Manteo post office to Stumpy Point, Manns Harbor and Engelhard.
Basnight's late wife, Mabel H. Basnight, served as producer and general manager of ``The Lost Colony'' theater from 1937 to 1946. She was business manager, bookkeeper and box office manager from 1937 to 1977, and continued to serve as box office manager through the 1992 season. She died in November of that year. by CNB
