GOP presidential candidates reported record fund-raising Thursday:
Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas has raised $8.5 million, in addition to $5 million he transferred from his last Senate campaign surplus, spokesman Gary Koops said.
Former Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander, using fund-raising to help prove himself a top candidate, said he has collected just over $5 million.
Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole of Kansas, the early front-runner, has raised slightly more than $4 million, including $200,000 transferred from his Senate campaign treasury, said spokesman Nelson Warfield.
Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, who officially announced his candidacy Thursday, has raised around $1 million, said his treasurer, Paul Diamond.
Sen. Dick Lugar of Indiana has raised under $1 million toward his year-end goal of $10 million, spokesman Mark Helmke said.
Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan also raised just under $1 million from 25,000 contributors and a $40,000 loan from himself, said Bay Buchanan, his chairwoman and sister.
