WE'LL PAY

We have cut down the forests, dammed the rivers, littered the land with toxic wastes and fouled the air we breathe.

We have, indeed, brought Nature to her knees.

Or have we?

As Thomas Carlyle said many years ago, ``Nature keeps silently a most exact Savings Bank and official register correct to the most evanescent item - and, at the end of the account, you will have it all to pay, My Friend - there's the rub.''

Nature is already beginning to call in her loans.
