THERE ARE ONLY two question marks for the Nansemond River baseball team this season - hitting and pitching.
``Those are some pretty big questions,'' head coach Phil Braswell said. ``We really are rebuilding.''
The Warriors lost two All-State players from last season's team. Brett Craun, now pitching at William & Mary, and Brian Elms, now playing second base at Radford.
``We lost four guys who had played three years or more,'' Braswell said. ``Nearly every time Brett stepped up to pitch we won last year.''
There are still a couple of Crauns out there to bolster the Warriors attack. Senior Whitney and junior Grayson return to both pitch and play outfield.
Grayson Craun put in an impressive performance in the Warriors' season opener against Brunswick. He tossed five no-hit innings with 10 strikeouts and two walks to key Nansemond River's 4-2 win.
Among the other returners are Jason Taylor, who pitched a one-hit shutout against Bruton on Tuesday with relief from Brad Little and freshman Chip Runyan. J.C. Caperton, who homered in that game, is at shortstop, Mike Byrum is back at third base and Donald Turner returns to center field.
The Warriors also will be looking to a couple of transfers, John Drames and Lee Parks, for help. ILLUSTRATION: Photos by MICHAEL KESTNER
