MCVEY, TALLWOOD ROLL TO KELLAM CLASSIC TITLE LIONS' STAR SCORED 3 GOALS; 56TH OF CAREER IS A BEACH RECORD.

Tallwood's Danny McVey became the most prolific scorer in Beach District boys soccer history Saturday in the championship of the Kellam Classic.

With his third goal in a 3-1 victory over the host Knights, McVey registered his 56th career goal to break the record set by his brother, Chris, at Green Run 12 years ago.

McVey's hat trick was his second of the tournament and gave him 11 goals on the season. He took tournament MVP honors for the second straight year, as fifth-ranked Tallwood (4-0) successfully defended its Classic title.

``It's kind of neat to have kept it in the family,'' the senior said.

McVey set the tone early, taking advantage of a Kellam mental error in its backfield and sending a rocket past Kellam keeper Jacob Etheridge on the left post just 15 seconds into the contest.

``We came out flat and that first goal really hurt us,'' Kellam coach Don Hart said.

McVey scored again about seven minutes later on a penalty shot to the left post with Etheridge guessing right. McVey's stroke was awarded after Kellam's P.J. Burns was whistled for tackling Anthony Webber in the box.

Despite a fierce Kellam charge in the the second half, McVey got his third goal with about 19 minutes left in the game when he took a high pass over defender Chris Phelan and easily beat Etheridge.

``I think we came out lax in the second half because of the two goal lead,'' McVey said. ``I knew that on that break I had to put it in and keep us on top.''

No. 3 Kellam (3-1-1) finally took advantage of its second-half pressure and got on the board when Jason Bonnett headed in a slow roller with Lions keeper Michael Aussey out of the box challenging.

In other games:

Ninth-ranked Maury (2-1-1) held off Deep Creek (1-2) to take third place with a 3-2 victory. Josh Bradley scored the winning goal in the second half. Teammates Aaron Katrancha and Matt Minquez also scored. Jeremy Shockley and Kevin Klewer tallied for Deep Creek.

Menchville captured fifth place with a 3-2 victory over No. 7 Churchland (1-2). Menchville got goals from Blake Steiner, Oliver Jones and Tyler Jones. Sean Paige and William Moore scored for the Truckers. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
