William Cromwell Haycox, 68, died April 1, 1995, in a local hospital.
Mr. Haycox was born in Norfolk, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach. He was also a member of the Princess Anne Country Club. After graduating from the Augusta Military Academy, he served in the Army Air Corps until the end of World War II. He attended the University of Virginia and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. As the honorable president of Haycox Construction Company, he built many of the schools in Virginia Beach, and was the general contractor for numerous jobs for the Navy at Oceana Naval Air Station, Dam Neck and the Norfolk Naval Base. Other accomplishments include the construction of many oceanfront hotels and buildings as well as the jetties at Rudee Inlet and work on the oceanfront boardwalk.
Mr. Haycox enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was an avid horseman, be it on the line, on the flat or in steeplechasing. A gentleman sportsman in the field, he was a member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, the National Steeplechase Association and the Virginia Thoroughbred Association.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Whitley Christian Haycox of Virginia Beach, two daughters, Mary C.H. Johnson and her husband, Pearce, of Charlottsville, Va., and Elizabeth D. H. Wykle and her husband, David, of Forest, Va.; one son, William C. Haycox, Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren; Joshua C. Wykle, Jesse C. Wykle, Dearing C. Johnson, Francis P. Johnson, Miriam W. Haycox, Claire D. Haycox, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 3, 1995, in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery, Virginia Beach, by Dr. J. Scottie Griffin.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church building fund, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
