LeRoy Porter of 1021 Norwich Avenue, L&J Gardens, Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully at Sentara Leigh Hospital on Friday, March 31st, at 2:10 p.m. after a brief but serious illness.
He was born in Coatsville, Pennsylvania, on June 4, 1922, the son of the late Lewis and Gertrude Porter. He was educated in West Chester, Pennsylvania Public Schools where he played football. He graduated from Virginia State College in the Class of 1945. Mr. Porter was president of the class and chairperson of this year's 50th Anniversary Celebration Committee. He received his master's degree from New York University.
Mr. Porter came to Norfolk State as the first football coach and had championship teams during his stay there. He later joined the faculty of Booker T. Washington High School where he coached with the late Albert Overby, Charles Williams and Huelon Willis. During his long tenure as an assistant coach to Coach Overby, the Booker T. Washington football teams were recognized throughout the state for its winning traditions. As head track and field coach, Booker T. produced its first winner (Vance Robinson) at the Penn Relays.
He loved sports, especially fishing and golfing. Just a few months ago, he was inducted into the Norfolk State University Hall of Fame and cited for outstanding contributions to the area of athletics.
He served as Assistant Principal at Booker T. Washington before retiring in 1984.
He is survived by his wife, Celestyne of 47 years (this was their anniversary month); daughter Evetta Lomax and her family; a sister Carrie Chapman of New Jersey; a cousin Vicki Brooklins of Philadelphia and many colleagues and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to your favorite charity. Burial will be private and held at a later date. The family wishes to express its appreciation for all expressions of concern during the time of Mr. Porter's illness. The family is requesting that there be no visitation made after the memorial services, which will be held on Monday April 3, 1995 at 2:30 pm in Hale Funeral Chapel. Rev. Lavert Taylor will be officiation. Hale Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
