ALICE HOLT PAYNE

Alice Holt Payne, daughter of the late Marshal and Rachael Jones Holt, was born Dec. 16, 1905, in Mebane, N.C. She departed this life March 30, 1995, at her home.

She was married to the late David William ``Bud'' Payne, and to this union three children were born.

Before her declining health, she was active in civic, church and community affairs. She was a life-long member of Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church. She taught school for many years in Orange and Alamance Counties and was a cosmetologist in New Jersey and Hillsborough, N.C., for many years. She was a member of Psi Pau Mu Chapter of the Alpha Chi Pi Omega Sorority and an honorary member of the Alice H. Payne Chapter (NU)22 of the North Carolina Beautician's Association. She received numerous honors and awards in the local and state organizations for outstanding service.

Alice Payne was a quiet, kind and gentle person with a warm smile. She loved her family and friends and was a devoted wife and mother.

She leaves to mourn her departure: her three children, Dr. Solomon C. Payne, M.D., of Suffolk, Mrs. Peggy Payne Drew of Manassas, Va., and Mr. Clarence E. ``Jack'' Payne of Hillsborough, N.C.; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Jean Payne and Ms. Patricia M. Payne; one son-in-law, Mr. Hulon J. Drew; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, including Mrs. Rosa Wright, Mrs. Denise Andino, Mrs. Ada Terrell, Mrs. Lorraine Horton, Mrs. Julie Stevenson and Mrs. Maude Harshaw, who lovingly cared for her during her infirmity.
