JANET M. LONG

Janet Maclean Long, 71, of 100 Suburban Parkway, Norfolk, Va., a cancer nurse specialist, passed away on Sunday, April 2, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Mrs. Long was born in Painesville, Ohio. She graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College and Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing. Continuing studies in nursing were completed at the Cleveland Clinic. She retired as a cancer nurse specialist and enterostomal therapist at Norfolk General Hospital and Georgetown University Hospital.

Mrs. Long dedicated her 42-year career in nursing to improving the care of ostomy cancer patients and their families and was involved in the Breast Cancer Demonstration Project and the Ostomy Rehabilitation Program in Washington, D.C.

She was a founding member of the Washington and Southeastern Virginia chapters of the Oncology Nursing Society and the Mid-Atlantic Association of Enterostomal Therapy. She served as president of the Mid-Atlantic region of the I.A.E.T. (International Association of Enterostomal Therapists). Some of her numerous awards include: 1978 E.T. Nurse of the Year; 1982 American Cancer Society 10-Year Volunteer Special Award; 1988 Nominated for Outstanding Nurse in Virginia; 1987 Appreciation Award from Lee's Friends. She was active in the Virginia Nurses Association and Tidewater Regional Cancer Network. She represented the I.A.E.T. at the World Council in Milan, Italy, and Dusseldorf, Germany, and was involved in the exchange program in Oncology Nursing between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

She was predeceased by her parents, Capt. Archibald Maclean and Effie Gillies Maclean of Islay, Scotland. Her survivors include two daughters, Susan Janet Murray and Cynthia Mary Long of Norfolk, Va.; her son-in-law, Dr. Kevin P. Murray of Norfolk; three sisters, Effie Hagner of Homosassa, Fla., Mary Helfer of The Woodlands, Texas, and Margaret Ambrose of Brookesville, Fla.; a brother, Capt. John Maclean of Cape Vincent, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Bridget and Sean Murray of Norfolk; 14 nieces and nephews; and numerous family and friends in Scotland and England.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 6, by the Rev. Segar Gravatt at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Norfolk. Altmeyer Funeral Home is in charge.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Long requested that contributions be made to the Norfolk Botanical Garden for a bench in her memory or to any organization that will help enrich someone else's life.
