Norfolk Southern Corp. said it will close railcar-repair shops employing 330 people in early July. Work at shops in Spartanburg, S.C., and Knoxville, Tenn., will be transferred to facilities in Decatur, Ill., Linwood, N.C., and Roanoke. Employees of the closing shops will be offered jobs at the remaining shops or other positions in the company. The railroad uses about 100,000 cars compared to nearly 160,000 in 1982, a spokesman said. Using fewer cars more efficiently, the railroad didn't need as much repair capacity, he said. (Staff) by CNB
