A 16-year-old girl was injured Monday evening when the sport utility vehicle she was riding in was struck by a slow-moving train on St. Julian Avenue near Tidewater Drive.
Celecia Kirby of the 400 block of Pendleton St. in Norfolk was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, police spokesman Larry Hill said. She was listed in satisfactory condition Monday night with facial lacerations and an injured leg.
Kirby was trapped in the 1991 Daihatsu Rocky for about 30 minutes after the Norfolk and Southern double-engine train crushed the left side of the vehicle and pushed it about 75 yards down the track, Hill said.
The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Jacqueline Evans of Banbury Court in Virginia Beach, was also taken to Norfolk General but was not seriously injured, Hill said.
The intersection has no traffic gate but does have lights, which were flashing, Hill said. The train engine's horn was blown twice as Evans drove the vehicle across the intersection about 7 p.m., Hill said.
Evans will be charged with failure to yield and driving without a valid license, Hill said.
