3RD DISTRICT GOP GIVES SLOT TO FRANKIE MEADS

Northeastern North Carolina Republican leaders joined ranks to win several influential jobs for Albemarle party members at the annual 3rd District Republican Party convention Saturday in Morehead City.

Frankie Meads, an Elizabeth City building supply executive, was unanimously elected second vice chairman for the GOP area by the 384 delegates. J.D. Teachey of Wallace, N.C., was named district chairman.

Danny Gray, Dare County party chairman, and Dr. Jerome Goldschmidt, Elizabeth City ophthalmologist, were named to the 3rd District Executive Committee. Gray also was appointed as the district's representative on the state Republican Party County Chairmen's Association.

``All things considered, I think we did very well,'' said John Schrote of Corolla, a member of the Currituck County Republican Executive Committee.

Schrote, an unsuccessful GOP candidate for the 1st District State House of Representatives' seat last year, played an active role in the electioneering that won major representation for the Northeastern Republican delegation in party jobs.

``Before the voting, members of the Albemarle delegation agreed to advance Frankie Meads' name for vice chairman,'' Schrote said.

Meads, who recently stepped down as chairman of the Pasquotank County Republican Party, was one of the party leaders who recruited Walter Jones Jr., as the successful November candidate for the 1st District U.S. House of Representatives.

He is credited with much of the recent growth of the Republican Party in the Elizabeth City area.

The 3rd District includes all or part of Camden, Currituck, Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell, Martin, Beaufort, Pitt, Craven, Pamlico, Carteret, Onslow, Lenoir, Jones, Wayne, Duplin, Pender and Sampson counties. by CNB
