TEEN IN STOLEN CAR IS HURT WHILE FLEEING POLICE

A 15-year-old boy was injured while trying to flee from police in a stolen car Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The teen, who was not identified because of his age, suffered face and chest injuries when he tried to jump from the car in the 700 block of Kimball Court.

He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Police spokesman Larry Hill said the 1993 black Dodge Shadow the teenager was driving had been stolen on Chesapeake Boulevard.

Hill gave this account of the chase: Police spotted the car on Hope Street near the Tidewater Gardens neighborhood at 3:02 p.m. But as officers approached the car in the 1000 block of Mariner St., the driver sped away.

The car, with police in pursuit, turned onto Virginia Beach Boulevard, then headed down Merrimac Avenue. It hit another car on Merrimac Avenue but kept going. The driver turned onto Kimball Terrace and finally pulled into the 700 block of Kimball Court, where he drove over the curb and into bushes.

He then tried to jump from the car. But the open driver's-side door struck a tree, bounced back and hit the suspect in the chest and face, breaking his nose.

Dozens of Grandy Village residents gathered near the scene. Several who knew the driver angrily accused police of beating him in his face and chest after he jumped from the car.

``He looked like he'd been shot in his face, that's how bloody he was,'' Catherine Wilson said. ``He was so little. He wasn't fighting them, he couldn't fight.''

Hill said there was no improper conduct by the officers, who were trying to restrain the driver and tend to injuries caused by the car door.
