Two Smithfield recreational league basketball teams in line to participate in state tournaments this weekend will not be going to the games.
Alan Nogiec, director of the Isle of Wight Recreational Facilities Authority, said late last week that the Smithfield Bulls and the Smithfield Rebels will not be allowed to play in the tournament because of a clerical error that originated at the Eastern District level.
Nogiec said the district office sent incorrect information to the district's parks and recreation departments. The error, which involved an incorrect contact name and telephone number, prevented all teams from having an equal opportunity to participate, he said.
Nogiec said he felt assured that if the society continues to offer the program, ``We will not be subjected to this situation again.''
He said the money raised to help send the two teams to the tournament will be returned to the sponsors.
Nogiec said he received a memo about the decision from the Virginia Recreation and Park Society headquarters. by CNB
