HERBERT M. HARTLOVE

Capt. Herbert Maurice Hartlove, USCG (Ret.), 71, of the 5000 block of Holly Road, died April 2, 1995, in Portsmouth.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa. Herbert served as officer in numerous Masonic affiliations: 1982, president, Portsmouth Chapter (NU)352 National Sojourners; 1983, commander, Gosport Camp, Heros of '76; 1984, worshipful master, Washington Lafayette Lodge (NU)176 AF & AM; 1984, worshipful master, Blackwater Lodge (NU)134, AF & AM; 1985 and 1986, founder, excellent chief, Emerald Isle Council Knight Masons of America; 1986, royal patron, Cavalier Court (NU)6 OOA; 1986-87, high priest, Port Norfolk Chapter (NU)36 RAC of Virginia; 1987-88, watchman of Shepherds Tidewater Shrine (NU)4; 1988, wise master of Rose Croie Scottish Rite; 1989-90, commander, Portsmouth Commandry (NU)5; 1989, sovereign master of Charles Flintoff Council (NU)198, AMD; 1990, associate regent SYRC; 1992, district deputy grand master of the 31st Masonic District; 1993, worshipful master, Ivor Lodge (NU)291 AF & AM; 1993, master of Kadosh of Portsmouth Consistory, SR; 1993, acting high priest, Wilbur A. Spain RAC (NU)84; 1993-94, high priest, Wilbur A. Spain RAC (NU)84; and 1994, worshipful master, Ivor Lodge (NU)291.

He was a senior warden of Virginia Research Lodge (NU)1777 and would have been master in December of this year. He also had been a member of Purdie Lodge (NU)170, Knights Preceptor, White Shrine (NU)2, Virginia Research Lodge (NU)1753, California Research Lodge (NU)2475, Missouri Lodge of Research, Walter Meier Research Lodge (NU)281, Maine Lodge of Research, Holy Land Lodge (NU)50, Pitman Masonic Club, Ark Mariners Lodge (NU)1, Masters Wardens & Deacons Portsmouth, Enoch Chapter (NU)5, RAC, Grand College of Rites, Masonic Order of Bath (AMD), Order of Corks (AMD), Robert Livingston Order (NU)90, York Rites College (NU)95, Royal Order of Scotland, King Darius Council (NU)17, Virginia College SRICF and Khedive Temple AAONMS. He also served as secretary of Q.C.C.C. Herbert belonged to Eastern Star (NU)78 and Gloria Chapter (NU)155. He was a member of Bunker Hill (NU)9 and the Confederate Sons of the Civil War.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Beatrice ``Moon'' Hartlove; a daughter, Linda Arlene Loring of Rockville, Md.; a son, J. Maurice Hartlove III of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister, Genevieve Mirra of Largo, Fla.; five grandchildren, Cerisa E. Hartlove, Joseph M. Hartlove IV, Alicia J. Hartlove, Michael C. Hartlove and Melissa C. Hartlove; and a number of cousins.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. Donald H. Seely. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. An Amaranth service will be held at the funeral home at 7 p.m. today with visitation following the service. Masonic service and military honors will be accorded at the graveside. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
