RETURN TO CHINA: The guided-missile cruiser Bunker Hill, based in Yokosuka, Japan, became the first U.S. Navy ship to visit China in six years with a port visit March 22 to Qingdao. Rear Adm. Bernard J. Smith, commander of Carrier Group Five, led the Navy delegation ashore. The Ticonderoga-class cruiser has a crew of about 385.

IN THE ``SPIRIT'': Just as Navy ships are christened, the Air Force's Air Combat Command, headquartered at Langley AFB, Hampton, has announced that the next operational B-2 stealth bomber will be dubbed the ``Spirit of South Carolina'' in ceremonies at Columbia, S.C., April 15. This will be the fifth B-2 delivered to the Air Force. In addition, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 56, a 250-member Navy Reserve and active-duty squadron based at Norfolk Naval Air Station, will christen its newest McDonnell Douglas C-9B Skytrain II transport the ``City of Virginia Beach'' in ceremonies at Hangar LP-33 at 1 p.m. April 23. The squadron operated four of the 90-seat aircraft, one of which is named the ``City of Norfolk,'' on worldwide routes.

CHANGE OF COMMAND

Army Col. Thomas C. Brown Jr. relieves Col. John E. Riley as garrison commander at Fort Eustis during ceremonies April 14. Brown's most recent assignment was as commander of the Military Traffic Management Command in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Riley will remain as chief of staff at Fort Eustis until his retirement this summer.

Cmdr. Emmitt D. Dickens Jr. relieves Cmdr. John J. Morrow as commanding officer of Fighter Squadron 14 at Oceana Naval Air Station. Dickens was executive officer of the F-14 Tomcat squadron. Morrow's next assignment is operations officer aboard the carrier America.

Retired Army Col. Edward B. English, base commander at Fort Story from 1991-93, has been named regional executive director of the Hampton Roads Armed Services YMCA. English had been an assistant vice president at Georgia Military College since leaving the Army in 1993.

Retired Coast Guard Rear Adm. Walter Ted Leland, who commanded the 5th Coast Guard District headquartered in Portsmouth between 1991 and his retirement in 1994, has been hired to manage the Cape May-Lewis Ferry.
