Kempsville's Kelly Knapp caught Maury keeper Colleen Maloney out of the box for what proved to be the winning goal as the No. 3 Chiefs edged fifth-ranked Maury, 2-1, in a girls soccer game Tuesday at Kempsville.
The Chiefs' winning play began with a through ball by Lora Phelps to Erin Duckett early in the second half.
Duckett broke through three defenders, but was held up just in front of the box by the recovering defense and a charging Maloney.
Duckett managed to dish off to Knapp. With her back to the ball, Knapp turned and fired into the empty right side of the box.
``I just saw it coming across and I just turned and shot,'' Knapp said. ``I didn't know if the keeper was there or not.''
Maury (2-4) scored 18 minutes into the first half when Amy Mayer beat Kempsville keeper Kelly Sisley to the far post. But the Commodores managed just two shots in the second half. Both teams finished with nine shots for the game. Winning keeper Sisley registered four saves and Maloney had two.
The Chiefs (2-2), who started slowly in the first half, scored with five minutes left when Duckett connected on a Hunter Garris cross.
``In the first half, we were playing on one side of the field,'' Knapp said. ``Once we slowed it down and started making the short passes, things got better. With the wind against us, we knew we had to keep the ball on the ground.''
