CHAIRPERSONS FOR TASK FORCE NAMED

The City Council's public housing task force has named chairpersons for its six subcommittees.

They are:

Marian Flickinger, legislation, regulations and demographics.

Ulysses Turner, education.

The Rev. Anthony Paige, personal values and substance abuse.

Doyle Hull, physical assessment and design.

Brenda Andrews, economic opportunity and upward mobility.

John Massey, supportive programs such as health care.

The subcommittees will be helped by staff from City Hall, the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the public schools system.

Meanwhile, the task force as a whole will meet the third Thursday of each month through December.

All meetings will start at 3 p.m. and be held in the parish hall of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. They are open to the public.

The task force is studying all aspects of Norfolk's public housing, including the social conditions of residents, educational and job opportunities and the effects of crime.

City Councilmen Herbert M. Collins Sr. and Mason C. Andrews are co-chairmen of the task force.

Members are:

Andrew Sacks, attorney; Judge Hal Bonney of the federal bankruptcy court; Judge William Williams of the juvenile and domestic relations court, and Charles Cooper, attorney.

Also, the Rev. Walter C. Barrett of the Basilica of St. Mary; the Rev. Courtney McBath of Calvary Revival Church; the Rev. Barbara Amos of Faith Deliverance Christian Center; the Rev. Robert G. Murray of First Baptist Church Bute Street, and the Rev. Anthony Paige of First Baptist Church Lamberts Point. Paige also is a city planning commissioner.

Also, John Massey, director of the Norfolk campus of Tidewater Community College; Harrison Wilson, president of Norfolk State University; James Koch, president of Old Dominion University; Ulysses Turner, School Board chairman and a developer, and William Whitehurst, a former congressman and a professor at ODU.

Also, Shirley Freeman, a housing authority commissioner and president of the Roberts Village Tenant Management Corp.; Elzie Stewart, president of Tidewater Gardens Tenant Management Corp.; Andrea Clark, former president of the Diggs Town Tenant Management Corp., Irene Dolberry, president of the Bowling Green Tenant Management Corp., and Denise Babbs, president of the Young Terrace Tenant Management Corp.

Also, Marian Flickinger, president of the Norfolk Federation of Teachers; Willie Barnes, president of the Norfolk Neighborhood Crime Prevention Coalition; Eloise LaBeau, president of the Norfolk Federation of Civic Leagues; Wes Swindell of the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project; Horace Downing, president of Berkley's Beacon Light Civic League; Charlene Christopher, president of the Norfolk Education Association, and Walter Green, a retired educator and resident of Greenhill Farms.

Also, Theodore Hall, resident of Meadowbrook Forest; Conrad Greif, banker; Thad Doumar, restaurateur; Dr. L.D. Britt of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital; Earle H. Williams III, clinical psychologist; Arlene Wright, real estate agent and wife of City Councilman W. Randy Wright; Brenda Andrews, publisher of the Journal & Guide newspaper, and Doyle Hull, retired banker and chairman of the city's housing authority. by CNB
